How to build your own inexpensive, large easel for supporting multiple small, medium paintings... or

Recently I found a simple and practical easel to build with commonly found materials and tools. The visuals to guide your construction are shown in the two photos in this posting. I found the design on Pinterest. Although there were no written instructions I believe most anyone can build this low cost easel by simply reviewing the photos closely.

This basic design allows you to adjust the working height of your art project, painting to suit your needs and have the best working height for your canvas, rigid panel or material you will paint or decorate. This is accomplished by using two medium sized C clamps to set the height of the "box shelf" that you will build. See photo. The two components are the "box shelf" as I call it, and the wood door that you find as a used item perhaps, or purchase as new at most any hardware store or lumber yard, big box store. The size of the box shelf can be how you wish in terms of depth, from the front to the back of the box shelf dimension. The vertical dimension of the box shelf can also be, within reason, a vertical dimension that you like it to be.

So what do you need?

1) A wooden door. They come in many sizes. Hollow doors may be the best as the weight is not too great and are readily available at most stores. Of course choose a door without a window, as in the photo here.

2) Lumber to build your "box shelf". Measure the width of your door to determine minimum lumber length you need for the 3- sided box shelf. Choose lumber dimensions based on standard board widths. Minimal cutting of boards should be necessary in this project.

3) Tools and supplies needed, as follows. a) hand saw. b) hammer c) slotted or phillips screwdriver d) white carpenter glue - optional for stronger bonding of boards. e) bubble level to check for level of all sides of box shelf. f) carpenter square to be sure all sides of box shelf are connected with true 90 degree corners. g) phillips or slotted head screws. length/ size of screws decided by your boxshelf board dimensions. h) Nails if you decide not to use screws but rather want to nail all the boards together to form your box shelf. i) measuring tape. Of course if you wish you can varnish or paint your completed easel project to protect the surface and make it more attractive as well.

Since there was no supply list I advise you as best possible, what I believe you will need.

Well, I hope if you have a need for such an easel, a small budget and don't mind making your own easel this could be a nice, useful and inexpensive project for you. Perhaps not the most beautiful easel, of course, but something that will accomodate most any size project/painting for not a lot of money...or time to build. Good luck.
