"On the way to Espanola"
This PASTEL painting of mine was created in my studio In Milwaukee Wisconsin. It came to be as a result of one of my special trips to the state of ( NM ) New Mexico, USA. I take many photographs in such travels to record the journey, the special memories and moments...but dual purpose my photo taking. I also see in most all my photography an opporunity for a future painting. This location in New Mexico of my posted painting here, "On the way to Espanola", was a standout in my selection of photos to use for a painting subject, in pastel.
Quite honestly, regarding places of interest that I have visited, NM is my all time favorite state. I did live there for a year or so and fell in love with the amazing nature, high desert, with the colorful botanical that often is only truly discovered when you walk observantly amongst the land. Also I greatly, deeply enjoyed the native american indian culture, richly adorned adobe dwellings, the wonderful natural light, magnificient sky and cloud formations of NM.
My painting was birthed, so to speak, on one of many roadside stops along the meandering and captivating Rio Grande river, near the riverside city of Espanola and neighboring sparse and tiny communities.
The mountainous surroundings further infused me with such a spirit and awe for the locale. It felt so right to be there in that special place in time. All of these strong impressions and warm sensations I carried back home with me to Milwaukee and soon became part of me and part of this painting I created.
